It's football time in DC!

For several years, we've had a co-ed, alumni flag football team in the CAN league. We're not the most athletic group, but we have a LOT of fun and even surprise ourselves with our talent -- or luck -- from time to time.

Our division this year is already set, and we're putting together our schedule and "out-of-conference" games. Here are the teams we'll definitely be playing: American University, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Richmond, South Carolina and Tulane. We'll try to fill out out-of-conference slots with other SEC teams to keep things interesting.

So what does it take to play? There's not a huge time commitment. We have a couple of preseason practices, and regular season games will begin on September 6/7 and will continue through the weekend of November 22/23. This year, the playoff tournament will be a two-weekend event. We have tentatively scheduled any necessary play-in games for Saturday December 6, 2008 and continuing on until the champion is crowned on December 13, 2008.

We don't ask a lot of players, but we do expect a minimum commitment to the team, so we don't fall short of players or refs during the season which hurts the whole team. That said, we are all about having fun! Miss a catch? We'll laugh WITH you not at you. No worries!

For more information on the league or the team, please go to http://dcvolsflagfootball.blogspot.com. You are welcome to direct questions to the coaches at flagfootball@utdcalumni.com

The following are requirements by CAN and/or the alumni chapter. By signing up for the team, you agree to commit to the following:

  • All players must sign and return a waiver before they play. Waivers can be downloaded from the link above (look at the menu on the right for "important documents").
  • Any team accepted into the league must play in the post-season tournament. Players are required to have played at least 5 games during the regular season to qualify for the tournament roster.
  • Teams must have a roster comprised primarily of alumni that attended the sponsoring school. See post containing the 75% rule below.
  • A roster must be submitted at the beginning of the season and updated weekly by the coach to show who played in which games.
  • A coach or player must attend the mandatory coaches/league meetings listed in the important dates post at the link above. It doesn't have to be the coach but every team must have someone there.
  • All DC Vols players will be required to attend a reffing clinic if they have not taken the exam before.
  • All players must take the certification exam to play.
  • Each player must commit to reffing 2 games during the season and tournament. If you aren't experienced, don't worry about it. You can keep the clock and be the backline judge.
  • Our alumni chapter should be participating in some of CAN's meetings and other activities outside of the sports leagues to remain in good standing and eligible for a team.
